Whitewater, Manly

After a long, choppy ferry ride and a visibly green girlfriend, we arrived at the Manly wharf and headed over to Whitewater for dinner. Whitewater is a chic restaurant on the waterfront of Manly beach serving Modern Australian cuisine with an Asian twist. We were drawn here by a “half off your bill” deal that Dimmi.com was running.

Fried cauliflower $16

The generous serving size of the dish was the first thing we noticed when the fried cauliflower came out. The cauliflower was perfectly cooked and the batter was lightly coated, paired with a mild, slightly sweet Asian-style peanut sauce. The onions added another layer of sweetness and crunch to the dish. This was a deep-fried dish done well, showcasing mild and complementary flavours with definitely enough to go around.

Pork belly $36

This was the star of my show; twice-cooked pork belly and perfectly cooked scallops, perfectly matched with the parsnip puree and currant compote. The stewed apple was a great element to add sweetness to the dish. Never have I had pork crackling so crispy and yet so mild in flavour. A true delight to the senses!

Vegetarian gnocchi (on request) $32

This was a special request by my girlfriend that was whipped up by the chefs at a moment’s notice. Amusingly enough, the first time this dish came out, they took the order of “no meat” to mean that seafood was ok! To the waiter’s credit, he caught this error before we called him over and was handled with great humour.

Interestingly, this was like a gnocchi stir-fry. There was a light pesto sauce but the perfectly cooked vegetables really shone through, with each adding their own texture and flavour to the mix. They also added a purple pickle to the sauce that added some tartness to the dish. To us, this dish was really a display of the skill of the kitchen team, to whip up such a complex fusion dish at such short notice.

A compliment to the service team. Their hospitality was impeccable, from accommodating us when we (accidentally) showed up an hour early to their infinite patience with our special requests. Our meal was handled with good but appropriate humour, we were very impressed with their professionalism. We definitely recommend Whitewater as a premier dining option on Manly’s waterfront.

Cost: $48.50 for two people. We dined at Whitewater cafe for half-price as part of a Dimmi offer

Bonus! While waiting for our food, my girlfriend decided it was the perfect time to take a 1,678,547 photos of me for the blog’s profile. Here are some that didn’t make the cut.
