We had heard a lot about this new vegan pub in Rozelle that serves up plant-based alternatives of pub favourites. A train and bus later, we arrived at the otherwise unassuming corner pub and walked upstairs to find a library-cum-bookshop dining area and the pub’s namesake lion (model) in the corner!
The Panko Tofu Chips and Wasabi Mayo looked to be an interesting side on the menu. As we were taking photos, the friendly owner who was passing by mentioned that it unfortunately doesn’t taste as good as it looks and will be coming off the menu soon. To be honest, I didn’t taste any wasabi in the mayo but my girlfriend liked the texture of the firm tofu. We agreed that the chips needed more flavour and we’re excited to come back and try their replacement!
The Baja Fish Tacos were very good. The mock fish they used was crisp and very much like fish with the cabbage addinga nice crunch to it. We added some hot sauce (Diemen’s Original Hot Sauce) they had available which gave the tacos the kick it needed. It would have been nice to have some lemon to add a bit more zest but overall it was a very solid dish and we would order it again.
The Green Mack Burger is slated as a vegan Big Mac burger so I just had to try it. The result was pretty good, actually. I enjoyed the “meat” patties which had great flavour and very close to the original patty but the lack of tendons and fat gave it away as vegan. The sauce was really good and the cheese (possibly Biocheese) melted really well. The fries were hearty and went well with a bit of vinegar.
We were really glad we visited The Green Lion to check out what vegan pub food is like. We enjoyed the energy and friendliness of the owner and it was great to see the menu continually improve. This pub is a great use of the previously under-used upper floor of The Red Lion Hotel. We’ll definitely be back here again to try more of the menu.
