Essen, Broadway

It’s October, which means one thing… Oktoberfest! That’s why we invited a few friends out with us to visit Essen, a German/Bavarian restaurant on Parramatta Road, a couple of blocks down from Broadway Shopping Centre.

I used to eat here monthly back in uni during my stint as treasurer of the German Klub (yeah, I know, right?). I hadn’t been back since that time a couple of years ago so I was eager to try this place out again. It was good to see they still had the 1kg schnitzel challenge on the menu (my friend tried it once… 1kg of schnitzel is A LOT of schnitzel).

Jagerschnitzel $23

For my dinner, I went with an old favourite: the Jägerschnitzel. This is basically a chicken, pork or veal schnitzel with a creamy mushroom sauce. The schnitzels at Essen come in two large sections. Mine was topped off with a generous amount of creamy mushroom sauce. The sauce was necessary as without it you just get a slice of lemon which, as my friend who got his without the sauce confirmed, did not give the schnitzel enough moisture. You also get potato Rösti and cabbage salad as sides but I miss their sauerkraut.

To accompany my schnitzel, I ordered a Erdinger Hefe, a Bavarian weißbier. Very refreshing!

Roasted vegetable & pesto salad $10 // Rösti $6

It was difficult for my girlfriend to find dishes that she could eat here but she decided to order the Roasted Vegetable & Pesto Salad with a side of Rösti. The salad was exactly what you would imagine. The vegetables were fresh and the pesto was good but the dish as a whole lacked punch and satisfaction. The rösti was similar, lacking any seasoning and just being… mushy.

My girlfriend ordered two drinks. The first was Karamalz, a non-alcoholic German malt drink which tastes like a sweet, malty soft drink. This is very German and definitely worth a try. Her second drink was Mango Weizen, a wheat beer with mango juice. A great option for those who don’t like that beer taste (like my girlfriend).

I’d like to be back again but given the choices my girlfriend is limited to, it’s hard to see that happening for now.

Cost: $67.50 incl. drinks
Payment: Accepts cash or card
