Mai Viet is a new Vietnamese restaurant among the many (delicious) Lebanese places near my office. It doesn’t look like much on the outside but on the inside, the fresh, clean and modern decor is pleasing to the eye. I had heard of their $10 special and that the food was of exceptional quality here so I just had to try it.
I found the ambience to be very pleasant with a lot of natural light, bright fixtures and tasteful artwork. In some ways it was slightly tacky but I would rather it over a dingy hole.
For lunch I ordered the Vermicelli Noodle Salad with Spring Rolls and Grilled Chicken. When it came out, I was impressed by the presentation of the dish. The components were presented separately, just begging for a photo. Endearingly, the waiter asked me if I had ever eaten a vermicelli noodle salad before and proceeded to explain that I needed to mix it up before eating it.
The colours really jump out at you and this was reflective of the quality of the noodle salad itself. The ingredients were really fresh and the flavours were perfectly balanced. The carrots were preserved properly and the peanuts added the perfect amount of crunch.
At the end of my meal, the waiter asked me if it was filling enough (admittedly, it wasn’t) and told me that I had the $10 medium size. The full-priced dish is larger. If you ever do find your way to Mai Viet, be sure to ask for their $1 dessert daily special. I’ll definitely be back again.
