Takumi is located on the top level of Market City in Haymarket. It’s a favourite meeting spot of my friend and I all the way back to our uni days.
The reason for this is that everything, no matter what, is $3 a plate ($2.50 if you have a student ID)! Though this excludes udon and drinks, it means you can eat a lot of sushi for a reasonable price.
The Prawn Fry is a must have every time I visit Takumi. I think I’m just a sucker for deep fried, crumbed prawn and mayo. This time they were a little over fried but still delicious. The crumbed prawn matches perfectly with the chunky mayo.
Another thing to get when you visit Takumi is their Aburi. Be sure to order it off a waiter to ensure you get it fresh. The salmon was moist and fresh but the searing gave it a charred flavour. This dish is one our favourites.
The flavour of the Eel was spot on and the flesh was soft and flaky however it seems that the pieces you get at Takumi are a bit smaller than at other places.
Lastly, my friend and I shared another must-try dish; the soft shell crab. The photo above only shows half of the portion. What you get is a complete, albeit small crab which has been deep-fried to perfection. The sauce is a rich, sweet soy sauce and it’s topped with shallots and bonito flakes.
As always, Takumi serves great sushi at a very reasonable price. Their location is hard to beat, too. This is certainly far from the first time we’ve been here and probably far from being the last.
