Reantong was recommended to me as one of the best value for money`Thai places in Surry Hills. Located on Devonshire Street just minutes from Central Station, it’s also very easy to get to. Unfortunately, there was loud construction work on the light rail going on outside.
Though Reantong Surry Hills has an à la carte menu, the pricing for their rice/noodle and choices are very straightforward and convenient. I opted for the three choices with rice and dined in for a larger serving- a tip from my coworkers!
There are plenty of choices in the warmed food display for you to choose from, both vegetarian and meat dishes. There’s bound to be something to suit everyone. You can also choose to add an egg to your dish and the selections rotate from time to time.
For lunch I had rice with Smoked Eggplant, Vegetable Red Curry and Num Prink Ouk, a traditional Northern style stir fried tofu with cherry tomatoes and chilli paste. The smoked eggplant didn’t taste too fresh or warm and I only got a couple of pieces of eggplant however the tofu and vegetable red curry was superb. The coconut cream added a lot of richness to the perfectly spicy curry. If you get a chance to try the Num Prink Ouk, it’s well worth it as the tofu has been stir fried to resemble pork mince and the cherry tomatoes and chilli paste combine to form a delicious sweet and spicy flavour. I was very full by the end of the meal. The value for money here is real!
I’m glad I managed to stop by here; I found great flavours and large serving sizes. Their popularity really speaks for itself. If you aren’t looking for fancy Thai food, just a quick, casual lunch with good, honest flavours then Reantong could what you’re looking for.
