Thai Break, Macquarie Park

Thai Break is located in Macquarie Centre right next to the bus stop and the Macquarie University train station. Not only do they offer the usual Thai offerings dishes, they also have an extensive vegan and vegetarian menu! Our friend regularly eats here because they have many gluten free options.

The shop itself has a somewhat dark interior which is furnished with photos of Thailand as well as paraphernalia. The restaurant is not huge however, they do a lot of business in takeaway and have plenty of seating near the front counter. We were able to find a table straightaway but the restaurant filled up quickly.

Vegetable and Tofu Laksa $13.90

I ordered the Vegetable and Tofu Laksa for dinner. Note that this dish is not vegan or vegetarian due to the presence of shrimp paste in the soup stock. This laksa came out beautifully presented, smelling delicious and garnished with spring onions, fried shallots and a slice of chilli.

The noodles were perfectly cooked and I really enjoyed the broad rice noodles that were served in this dish. There were plenty of fresh, crunchy vegetables and the garnishes added plenty of flavour. My only criticism was that the soup of the laksa was a bit too salty which overshadowed the spices and made it difficult to drink. That being said, it definitely scratched my laksa itch.

Vegan Gravy Noodle $12.50

My girlfriend ordered something we’d never tried before, Gravy Noodle, off the vegan menu and it turned out to be delicious. The gravy was thick and salty and there were heaps of vegetables with a good assortment. She just wished that there were more of those beautifully charred rice noodles. This dish is a great vegan option.

Warm Soy Milk $3.50

I also ordered a Warm Soy Milk to go with my laksa. It came out piping hot and the perfect level of sweetness. It was so good that my girlfriend decided to order one as well. Unfortunately, we ordered it just as another dinner rush came in and ended up waiting 10 minutes for our second soy milk despite a few reminders and confirmation from the waiter. The second soy milk was served lukewarm, which was a shame.

Despite the few issues we experienced having our meal at Thai Break, I respect them for offering a vegan menu and having the knowledge and experience to advise us on the best vegan dishes for our tastes. There were many aspects of our dishes that we loved as well and we’ll be back next time we’re looking for Thai food in Macquarie Centre.
