At the entrance to the Star on the corner of Union Street and Edward street lies the latest casual dining venture of Chef Chase Kojima, Gojima. It presents his spin on the humble cheeseburger, adding his modern Japanese twist to this fast food icon.
Getting straight into it, we both decided to go for the Gojima Mushroom Burger. The Gojima Mushroom Burger has a katsu mushroom, cheese, tomato, pickles, onion, lettuce and a special spicy sauce.
Instead of the traditional bun, Gojima serves their burgers with crispy rice wrapped in nori to create a sushi burger. The deep-fried rice felt more filling than a traditional bun however also added more oil to the experience. The spicy sauce worked well with the juicy katsu mushroom making a strong combination. Definitely a treat worth trying but not if you’re trying to stay healthy.
We also ordered a Large Fries to go with our burgers. The size was more than enough for us to share. They were served with seasoned umami salt which added plenty of flavour. The fries were fresh and crispy and the perfect accompaniment to any meal.
Another unique offering of Gojima is their Miso Soup, packed full of ingredients and flavour. Suffice to say, I really enjoyed it.
Serving an alternative to the traditional burger in a bun with quality that elevates this burger past a cheap gimmick, Gojima is a great choice if you’re looking for a quick lunch or casual dinner.
